The productivity of agricultural systems in Tanzania is too low to provide adequate levels of income and food safety, as well as investment opportunities in companies. Small farmers face challenges such as insufficiently fertile soil, climate change, access to up-to-date information and support services for agriculture. There is also a lack of well-managed professional growers organisations, and farmers do not have the entrepreneurial and agricultural skills and knowledge needed to move from subsistence farming to more competitive, entrepreneurial levels.
The Fondazione Lavazza, in collaboration with the Fondazione Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung (HRNS), focuses on enhancing the skills of farmers and their organisational structures, in order to offer them the right tools to become increasingly competitive in the market. Project interventions relate to the whole value chain: from production to marketing, including crucial issues such as food safety, diversification of production, adaptation to climate change, issues related to the enhancement of the role of women and the creation of opportunities for young people.
